Overview of Ngoc Well

The largest Ngoc Well in Vietnam is located at the foot of the ancient Bai Dinh Pagoda (Gia Sinh commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province). Historically, the well was about 1,000 years old.

In the past, Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong (founder of Bai Dinh Pagoda), in his dream, was told by gods about precious water at the foot of the mountain near the temple. After that, he took well water to make medicine for the people.

Today, when the ancient and new Bai Dai Pagoda was embellished and built, Ngoc well was also renovated. The well has a moon face with the diameter of nearly 30m and depth of about 6m. Around the mouth of the well is built of stone on Dinh Mountain.

Campuses around the well are square in size up to 6.000m2, four corners are the octagonal houses. The surrounding landscape is planted with shady trees. To get to the well, you have to go through a beautiful stone gate.

Water in Ngoc well is clear and cool all year round, pleasant to drink. Miraculously, the well has never been dry, even though it was only a small well before). Ngoc Well water is also used to offer to Buddha at the temple ceremony.

It is known that in the process of building the new Bai Dinh Pagoda – the largest temple in Vietnam with many records in Asia, Southeast Asia, and Vietnam; hundreds of workers, engineers, laborers use well water for living, cooking, bathing, mixing concrete, etc, however, it has never been exhausted.

Because Ngoc well is never dry, local people often refer to it as “the well of the gods” or “eye of the dragon”. At the festival of Bai Dinh Pagoda in the beginning of the lunar year, thousands of people come here to worship, visit the temple and come to the Well to wish for peace and good luck.

In December 2007, the Record Book Center of Vietnam issued a certificate confirming the record of “The largest well in Vietnam” for Ngoc Well – Bai Dinh.
